Many of today's online backgammon rooms host daily, weekly, monthly and special event backgammon tournaments. The entry fee, prize and the tournament format changes from one room to another. Nevertheless, here you can find general introduction to online backgammon tournaments.

Online backgammon tournaments allow you to compete against larger number of players than in a regular one-on-one backgammon match. And if we are talking about a real money backgammon tournament, you get the chance to earn not only the respect of your online backgammon community members, but some nice financial reward. 

Online Backgammon Tournamnet - Definition

Online backgammon tournament is a competition consists of several matches and a large number of participants. Each match usually lasts 3-5 points. The tournament winner is declared according to average outcome of the single matches. 

Backgammon Tournaments Formats

To clarify this, here are explanations on the different formats commonly used in online backgammon tournaments: 

Sit & Go Tournaments

Online backgammon tournaments that involve set number of and a flexible schedule - once the maximum capacity of players has been reached (usually no more than 64), the games begin. 

Knockout Tournaments

A type of elimination tournament divided into several rounds; the tournament begins with a set number of participants and the number is reduced at the end of each round. On the last round, the two participants who've outplayed in all the former rounds meet for a heads-on match. 

Swing Tournaments

Online backgammon tournaments with no buy-in option; the tournament begins when all the participants have the same amount of chips and a player's stock empties, he is eliminated from the tourney. When a player wins and moves on to compete against another winner, he heirs the losing player's chips. The winner of the swing tournament is the last player to remain with the other players' chips. 

Satellite Tournaments

A type of scheduled tournament in which the winners are reward with a free entry to an event tournament or any other profitable backgammon tournament 

Event Tournaments

A scheduled tournament with an unlimited number of participants, entry fee and a prize pool determined by the number of registered players.

Other types of online backgammon tournaments include rating limited tournaments, in which only players with a certain skill level (as expressed by their rating), or star tournaments, which are online backgammon tournaments whereby the players can buy-in using the "starts" they have accumulated during regular backgammon matches, and more…
