The First Internet Backgammon Server (FIBS) was formed in 1992, when broadband internet access was not very common, 3D backgammon board and dice were an imaginary vision and players could interact with each other using text-based messages. About the same time, backgammon server has been used as a study tool that analyzed moves and positions in games taken between a human player and the computer.   

Towards the end of the 20th century, when internet access has become faster, more accessible and less pricy, the online gaming market grew, and so did the options offered to fans of the backgammon game. All the biggest online gaming portals had added multi player backgammon games and new websites that focus entirely on backgammon were launched.

People who wanted to play backgammon on the internet could easily find selection of 3D photorealistic backgammon games in which they can not only communicate with each other using chat feature but also exchanging photos, emotions and instant messages. Additionally, players could participate in variety of online backgammon tournaments that involved dozens, and sometimes even hundreds of internet users from different parts of the world.
