Olympic Skill Games in London and in Prague

The 12th Mind Sports Olympiad (MSO) is occurring at the moment with predominance of backgammon players. Some of the results have been released for publication:

Peter Bennet won the Gold medal at the Vincent Square Cup, Irving Czechowicz, the Silver and John Reddington was rewarded with a bronze medal. The backgammon tournament played in the Swiss format with 28 entrants. With a record of 5 wins each, the medalists' scores will be added to Biba Grand Prix and Ranking Championship list.

Another Mind Sports Olympiad is expected to take place in Europe next month. The Central European Mind Sports Olympiad, scheduled to begin on September 27 until October 5, 2008, at the Czech Sokol (Česká obec Sokolská) in Prague, the Czech Republic. On top of backgammon, the Olympiad will host 320 more skill games including go, draughts (checkers), scrabble and more.

The backgammon part of the Central European Mind Sports Olympiad, called Evening Backgammon is scheduled to October 3 from 5 to 11 PM. Participation is open to everyone, and the entry fee ranges from 25 Czech Republic Koruny for children under 15 to 50 CZC for a standard seat (£0.8 – £1.6, providing the registration was done before the 20th of September). The 3 winners will earn a medal, a diploma, and a game of their choice, a gift from the sponsors of the event.

In addition to the official backgammon tournament, participants can play and practice backgammon everyday between 9 AM to 10 PM during the Olympiad week at the Ludotheque. The Ludotheque also provides a great opportunity to get to know new games from the selection of 300 board games contributed by the organizers of the event, Board Games Club Paluba. Unfortunately, to make the best of this treasure of skill games, acquaintance with the Czech language is required.
