Nordic Open Results & WSOB Tour 2009Play65 Nordic Open backgammon tournament was championed by Claus Elken, who beat Tage Mellgren in a dramatic, best out of three 5-point matches final, commented by Karsten Bredahl (no. 5), Carter Mattig (no. 8) and Matvey "Falafel" Natanzon (who failed to get into the quarterfinals). The 2009 Nordic Open was played, for the first time, in the double elimination format.
The 2009 21st annual Nordic Open lasted from Thursday 9 April to Monday 13 April, 2009 and included lots of events and side events on top of the main competition. The Intermediate competition was won by Neculai Draganuta and the Beginners' by Claus Steensgaard. Jurgen Orlowski won an entry to the 2009 Japan Open, and Kenny Nissen, the director of the Danish Backgammon Federation, won an iPod Touch at the Nordic Open DMP.
World Series of Backgammon 2009 Finally Announced
The schedule for the 2009 World Series of Backgammon was finally announced at the Nordic Open by Gus Hansen, who will be the commenter of the WSOB championship for the second year in a row. The 3rd season of the backgammon tour will begin on 22-26 July, 2009 with the WSOB Cannes Riviera Cup in France. The next stop of the tour will be the WSOB Prague European Championships in Prague, Czech Republic between 9 September and 13 September. WSOB last stop and champion will take place in the UK, at the WSOB London UK Masters starting on 21 October and finishing on 25 October.
WSOB Championship is planned to be taken between 32 players, creating a €320.000 prize pool (last year, a sum of €160,000 split between the winner and the finalist €100,000 and €60,000). The €10,000 seats at the final table will be occupied by the 24 top players of the season and 8 qualifiers, who will be able to qualify in online super satellites or any of the WSOB tour stops.
WSOB 2008 Broadcast
Starting on Thursday, April 23, 2009, WSOB Riviera Cup and Championship 2008 will be broadcast across Europe (not including the UK) on Eurosport 2. The broadcast schedule in the UK will be announced soon.
