EBGT Portuguese Open 2009 – Results

The 2009 Portuguese Open took place last weekend at the Hotel Vila Galé Estoril in Portugal with 52 backgammon players at the Masters division and 32 more in the Intermediate, including 15 UK representatives, and a new Austrian winner, Frans Bergi. The British players topped the Intermediate competitions, with English man David Ablett taking over the first place. Another English player, Raj Jansari, took home the special player trophy for fair play.

On top of the multitude of UK backgammon players, the Dane delegation stood out in its size (19 players!) and achievements. Therefore, it was not surprising that the Danish Team Champs won in the exhibition match held against The Rest of the World, a team of 5 players coming from 5 different nations: Israel, Japan, USA, Canada and Austria.

The Portuguese Open was the opening shot of EBGT (European Backgammon Tour) third season. Thus, all of the 2009 Portuguese Open winners (including consolation and last chance winners) have started accumulating masterpoints, World Backgammon Association rating points. In addition, the backgammon tournament champion has won a free seat at the next stop of the tour – the Georgian Open scheduled to 29 July-5 August in Tbilisi, Georgia.
