Backgammon – Gentlemen's GameSometimes, context is everything. When a blog called Full Windsor and tagged "the development of a modern gentleman", dedicates a post to backgammon, between Hunter S. Thompson and sportscaster Harry Kalas, it does not really matter if it is about backgammon, the game, or backgammon, frank the singer of The Sammies, we are flattered anyway.
Nevertheless, John Patrick George did write about the game of backgammon, dubbing it an elegant and sophisticated game with "healthy balance of luck and skill" and situating it somewhere in the middle between the often too challenging chess game and the not enough challenging game of checkers, among the best games a gentleman can play, and gives a short intro to backgammon basics. In addition, he beautifully describes one of the best game features:
"Like baseball, 5 year old’s can take it up and enjoy it as a group while the big boys can play pretty much the same game with all aspects tuned to their extreme. " And by extreme, he probably means long, boozy sessions of backgammon where score sheets are filled from top to bottom and the cube is turned over and over and over again.
