2001 Year of Online Backgammon?The rise of skill games, backgammon among them, is one of the 50 exciting gaming events and trends expected in 2011, according to Gambling Online Magazine, which also marks its 50 issues anniversary.
"Could 2011 be a ‘breakout year’ for backgammon, mahjong, dominoes and brag?" The online gambling magazine asks, referring the anticipated boost with the assistance World Series of Backgammon (that actually stopped operating live backgammon events in 2009) and some unnamed Hollywood celebrities known as active domino players.
The magazine also predicts that in 2011 poker players will discover what backgammon players have forgot long time ago – the joy of finding the hidden treasures of Europe (or any other continent on the poker or backgammon tournaments' map). So, the adventurous poker player might have Latvia and the Republic of Malta stamps on his passport by the end of the year.
The backgammon frequent travelers can start packing for the Play65/EBGT WBA/ISTAVDER Anniversary Tournament in Istanbul. And/or start making flight arrangements for the future Play65/EBGT events: the European Pro & Doubles Championships in Cyprus, the Golden Gate Open in San Francisco, the Portuguese, Georgian and French Backgammon Open tournaments, the Mallorca Backgammon Challenge and the Cyprus Open that will be followed by the Grand Finale.
And that was just the European Backgammon Tour. Smaller tours include the Turkish Backgammon Tour, the Croatian Backgammon Tour and the British Backgammon Tour, and there are local backgammon federations championships that warmly welcome foreign players (Swedish Open, Japan Open, etc.)
